Meanwhile, humans learned to harness inner magic to project pairs of wings, referred to as Wings of the Heart, in order to make aerial travel possible for them. The five great pieces of land became the Five Grand Continents, serving as the hub for human development throughout the sky-world.ĭuring the millennia that followed, humans progressed substantially, and unconditional support for pro-magination waned as the advantages of machinery became apparent again. With Malpercio defeated and Wiseman nowhere to be seen, the world could usher in an era of uncertain peace, now living among the clouds. Lifting five great pieces of land through the sheer force of their magic, they made them levitate far in the sky, while the Taintclouds-poisonous, thick bodies of gaseous magic-appeared to seal the putrid earth off from the now sky-dwelling humans. Finally managing to seal him away through the power of ancient practicioners of magic, Malpercio's influence nonetheless lingered upon the earth in the form of Taint, a corrupted, noxious magic that quickly rendered the land uninhabitable.Īs protectors of the world, the Ancient Gods who had helped in the suppression of Malpercio decided that the only way for humanity to prosper would be to remove them from the irrevocably poisoned earth, and let them take for the skies in search of a new future. Eventually, the Wicked God became a greater evil than Wiseman himself, who had retreated to recover, and humanity was forced to combat Malpercio instead. Their battle raged for several days, but Wiseman was only crippled, and the damaged Malpercio went berserk with rage, turning against the very people it had been born to protect.
Malpercio was a being of unmeasurable strength, capable of rivaling Wiseman, but not of destroying him. Five siblings, the descendants of powerful sorcerers in their own right, fused their essence-the same immaterial energy that is used to bind materials to Magnus-and transformed into a single entity known as the Wicked God: Malpercio.
They did so, but only through great sacrifice. Quick to stop him, the world's forces did a face-heel turn against Wiseman, determined to put an end to his scheme. Believing that world conflict would cease and a peaceful eternity would usher in the transformation of all matter into Magnus, he set out to accomplish this goal using the power and influence he had amassed. He believed that Magnus converted matter into a wholly perfect state of pure energy, as opposed to the divided and fleeting matter in which the world took its present form. However, Wiseman was not only an incredibly powerful wizard, but a man of an extremely strong philosophy. The usefulness of Magnus and the wealth that it produced tilted the popular and corporate opinion towards the use of magic significantly, and this trend only amplified with time throughout the world. Known to have invented Magnus, the single most useful artifact in the history of humanity since then, Wiseman supported pro-magination wholly, believing that only magic derived from the power of the human heart, and not the cold and amoral logic of machines, could bring a true utopia among civilization. While many searched for a middle ground between the two philosophies, their efforts were largely fruitless, as pro-magination and pro-machination continued to be irreconciliable for centuries to come.Įventually, however, pro-magination found itself in a place of greater power with the arrival of Wiseman, a figure whose true identity has been lost to history. While pro-magination supported the use of magic and ancestral, natural methods for the progress of civilization, pro-machination opted for the power and production of machines in order to reach new and uprecedented heights.
Ever since humanity reached its peak in development, a dichotomy of directly-opposed ideals surfaced and clashed constantly: pro-magination and pro-machination.
